About the Champagne Region

Champagne is 34,200 hectares of vines across 319 villages, about 150 km north-east of Paris, and in 2015 UNESCO listed its hillsides, houses and cellars as World Heritage. Join us in Reims, where 25 km of cellars run through the chalk under the Saint-Nicaise hill, and on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, with 110 km more beneath it. Between the two lie the villages where families make champagne from their own vines. We bring together champagne wine tours from Paris and from Reims. Start with the three above.

Reims

Reims Cathedral, free to enter and open daily from 8:00, saw 33 kings crowned between Louis the Pious in 816 and Charles X in 1825. The Palais du Tau beside it is closed for works until 2027. Veuve Clicquot, Mumm, Pommery, Ruinart, Lanson and Taittinger all receive visitors in the city, and the TGV from Paris takes 45 minutes.

Épernay

The Avenue de Champagne runs a mile and a half through Épernay, with Moët & Chandon at number 18 and 110 km of cellars under the street. The Musée du Vin de Champagne, in the Château Perrier, costs €10. In the hillside village of Hautvillers, the abbey church keeps the tomb of Dom Pérignon, cellarer there for 47 years.

Houses and Growers

In 2025 the region counted 410 houses, 120 cooperatives and 16,460 growers. A house (NM on the label) buys grapes to add to its own, while a récoltant-manipulant (RM) makes champagne only from its own vines. Booked direct, the houses charge from €20 at Nicolas Feuillatte to €90 at Ruinart for a cellar visit.

Champagne lies about 150 km north-east of Paris. The operators allow around two hours each way by road, and the TGV from Gare de l'Est reaches Reims in 45 minutes, at Reims-Centre or at Champagne-Ardenne TGV, which a tram links to the centre. Day tours collect you at your hotel or meet at a Paris kerb from 7:15, and the Reims days meet at the station.

Plan your visit

The season changes what a day can hold. Picking opened between 8 and 22 August in 2026, commune by commune, and Veuve Clicquot closed for the winter from 28 December 2025 to 7 April 2026. The cathedral towers close from 16 November to 14 February, and Épernay's Habits de Lumière runs on 11, 12 and 13 December 2026.

Not always. The region has no gate and no entry ticket: Paris Champagne tickets are in fact each house's cellar visit, sold on its own website, and the TGV from Gare de l'Est puts you in Reims in 45 minutes. Reims Cathedral is free to enter, and no Paris Champagne reservation is needed to walk in.

So the Paris Champagne ticket prices that matter are the houses' own: Mumm from €30, Veuve Clicquot €36 and Moët & Chandon €48 for an adult. What a tour adds is the rest of the day: family growers beside the famous names, two or three producers joined up without a car, lunch at a winemaker's table on some days, and nobody in your party driving after the tastings. Most day tours from Paris to Champagne run 10 to 12 hours door to door.

How far is Champagne from Paris, and how long is the drive?

The region lies about 150 km north-east of Paris. The operators allow around two hours each way by road, depending on traffic, so most day tours from Paris run 10 to 12 hours door to door. By TGV from Gare de l'Est, Reims is 45 minutes away.

Can I visit Champagne from Paris without a tour?

Yes. The TGV reaches Reims from Gare de l'Est in 45 minutes, and the big houses sell cellar visits direct on their own sites. A tour earns its fare when you want several producers in one day, lunch at a winemaker's table, and nobody who has to drive after the tastings.

Do I need a ticket for a Paris Champagne tour?

No: Champagne has no gate and no entry ticket. What you pay for is each house's cellar visit and tasting, which a tour either puts in the fare or leaves to you. On their own sites the houses charge from €20 (Nicolas Feuillatte, one glass) to €90 (Ruinart) for an adult.

What does a Paris Champagne tour cost?

Shared days from Paris run from $268 to $443 per person, and the days that start at Reims station from $152 to $286. Private days cost $550 to $1,229 per person, or $1,893 for one car of up to seven. A champagne cruise on the Seine starts at $92.

Which Paris Champagne tours include lunch?

Lunch is in the fare on the My Winedays days, the Go Go Tours lunch days, an all-inclusive minivan day, France Intense's nine-tasting day from Reims and Sparkling Tour's growers' days. Most other days leave lunch to you, and each tour card says which.

Are the tasting fees included?

On most tours, yes: the cellar visits and tastings are in the fare. Some private days from Paris leave them to you, so you pay each house on the day at its own price. Those cards say Tasting fees extra.

Will I visit Moët & Chandon or Veuve Clicquot?

Only on the tours that name them, and even then subject to availability; most shared days assign the big house on the day. One operator's listings say both close in January and February, and Veuve Clicquot's own site shows it closed from 28 December 2025 to 7 April 2026.

What is the difference between a champagne house and a grower?

A house, or négociant-manipulant (NM on the label), buys grapes, musts or wines to add to any of its own and makes champagne on its premises. A récoltant-manipulant (RM) makes champagne only from its own vines. In 2025 the region counted 16,460 growers, 120 cooperatives and 410 houses.

Is there a half-day champagne tour from Paris?

Not a true one. The private Moët & Chandon trip sold as a half day is timed by its own listing at 7 to 9 hours, because the drive alone takes about four. The short options are the 4.5-hour afternoon from Reims station and the 75 to 90 minute champagne cruises on the Seine.

Private or small group: which should I book?

A private day costs $550 to $1,229 per person against $152 to $443 on a shared one, but the car, the pace and often the route are yours. Shared days run at a fixed time with caps of 7 or 8 on most, and 23 to 25 on the larger Go Go Tours departures, so check the cap on each card.

Do Paris Champagne tours pick up from my hotel?

Many do, and the card says Paris hotel pickup where the fare includes it. Others meet at a fixed Paris point between 7:15 and 7:45 am, such as Boulevard Saint-Germain or Place d'Italie. The Reims days start at Reims station, which you reach by train yourself.

Can children come on a champagne tour?

It depends on the tour. Some set no minimum age, others start at 4, 7, 10 or 12, and some take adults only. Go Go Tours pours grape juice for under-18s, so check the minimum age on the listing before you book with a child.

Can I cancel a Paris Champagne tour?

On nearly every tour you get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. The exception is a private day sold as non-refundable, and its card says so.

What should I wear in the cellars?

Bring a layer: the chalk cellars stay at 10 to 12 °C all year, at 90 to 100% humidity. Wear flat shoes with grip, because you reach the cellars by stairs and the floors can be damp.

What is a champagne boat tour in Paris?

It is a 75 to 90 minute cruise on the Seine with champagne poured on board, not a trip to the vineyards. You can take a private boat for up to four from Port de Javel, or join a shared tasting cruise with a sommelier from Port de Suffren, by the Eiffel Tower.

An afternoon in Reims

The Basilica of Saint-Remi is free to visit, with an audioguide at €6 from the tourist office, and the cathedral stays open until 19:30 on weekdays and Saturdays.
